The Hellraiser franchise is what happens when somebody discovers a mysterious puzzle box and decides, “You know what? My life needs MORE demons, chains, and unspeakable cosmic horrors!” Created by horror legend Clive Barker, this twisted series kicks off with the 1987 original, introducing Pinhead and the Cenobites, otherworldly beings who explore the blurry line between extreme pleasure and unimaginable pain. What follows is a gloriously gruesome mix of supernatural horror, creepy mythology, bizarre body horror, and some seriously nasty practical effects. The original movies have a wonderfully dark, gothic atmosphere, even if the quality gets a little… let’s say inconsistent as the franchise goes deeper into the box. With multiple sequels, reboots, comics, and enough hooks, chains, and leather to make a heavy metal band jealous, Hellraiser remains one of the most unique and disturbing horror franchises ever created. Just remember: sometimes it’s better to leave that mysterious puzzle box alone.
