Square Pegs – Video Game Pickups – 29 Games on Switch, PS5, Super Famicom, More!

Square Pegs is the retro gaming YouTube channel that feels like it was lovingly assembled from an ‘80s toy aisle, a VHS tape left too close to a magnet, and the exact moment someone blew into an NES cartridge and made magic happen. Hosted by a guy who looks like he’s just one caffeine crash away from organizing a complete Game Boy Color library, Square Pegs is a glorious celebration of all things pixelated, plastic, and questionably licensed. It’s the kind of channel where “hidden gem” doesn’t mean obscure—it means a game that probably sold three copies, came in a cardboard sleeve, and features a boss fight against a mutant waffle iron.

Each episode is like being invited to a sleepover where the pizza’s cold, the soda’s flat, but nobody cares because you just found out Faxanadu kind of slaps. Jay Malone’s encyclopedic knowledge of retro titles is matched only by his ability to roast bad box art like it personally offended him. There’s deep dives, listicles, hauls, and enough CRT nostalgia to give a magnet a nervous breakdown. Watching Square Pegs feels like digging through your old game drawer and realizing, “Oh right, I did own Yo! Noid… but why?”

JRPGLive – Our Greatest Nintendo 3DS Find of All Time

Ah, the Nintendo 3DS — the magical little clamshell that dared to say, “What if your eyeballs could do squats?” Released in 2011, this handheld wonder came with glasses-free 3D, which was either a mind-blowing leap into the future or a fast track to a mild headache, depending on how steady your hands and how forgiving your optic nerves were. You’d slide that 3D depth slider up just to say you did, marvel at Mario’s floating mustache for ten seconds, then immediately slide it back down and never touch it again. But the real charm wasn’t in the gimmicks — it was in the games, which were so good they made you forget the bottom screen was mostly used to poke at maps like a high-tech pirate.

The 3DS had everything: a weirdly effective StreetPass system that turned walking through malls into RPG side quests, a camera that took grainy 3D selfies (so you could finally see yourself disappointed in depth), and a library bursting with hits — Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pokémon X/Y, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and enough Monster Hunter to destroy your thumb joints before age 30. The thing looked like a toy, sounded like a toy, but punched like a heavyweight champ in a hardware match. It even had backward compatibility with DS games, because Nintendo is the kind of friend who lets you borrow all their old stuff without even asking. The 3DS wasn’t just a handheld console — it was a pocket-sized party, a nostalgia grenade, and an eye-melting miracle all at once.

Is video game collecting as bad as they say?

We’re heading to Columbus, Ohio, for TORG, the Ohio Retro Gamer Expo! In this video, I’ll focus on deals you can find at these events. I’ll ask vendors—who buy and sell games daily—what they think are the best deals today. I’m also working on my Sony PSP collection, and I’ll show you everything I picked up at the end.

The Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) is the cool kid who showed up at the party with the swagger of a console and the size of a big smartphone (back when phones weren’t that smart yet). It’s like the Swiss Army knife of gaming, trying to be your gaming console, your MP3 player, and even your Netflix (though streaming wasn’t quite ready to party yet).

The PSP flexed its muscles with a gorgeous 4.3-inch screen, boasting graphics that made you say, “Wait, this is portable?!” It had Wi-Fi so you could school your friends in multiplayer—if you could convince them to lug their PSPs around. And let’s not forget the UMD discs, those quirky little Frisbees that carried your games and movies. They looked futuristic but were basically mini-CDs with trust issues.

Sony even tried to make the PSP your entire life: it had a web browser (sort of), a photo viewer (but no camera), and music playback (for when your iPod forgot its place). The battery life was decent—unless you were watching UMD movies, in which case it gave up faster than a kid in a math test.

The PSP was like that overachiever friend who insists on doing everything, and honestly, it nailed a lot of it. Sure, the controls felt a little cramped, and the proprietary memory cards were pricier than gourmet coffee, but the PSP brought portable gaming into the spotlight, and it did it with style. Plus, it gave us Monster Hunter marathons and the ability to watch Spider-Man 2 on the go—what more could you want? (Except maybe fewer smudges on that glorious screen.)
